Burkina Faso is a country in West Africa with a population of over 18 million and economic growth of about 7% annually. The increase in economic growth is primarily due to gold exports.  Nearly 80% of the population is involved in subsistence farming. Burkina Faso has benefited from a United States government grant (Millennium Challenge Corporation) to improve its economy. Underdeveloped sectors include but are not limited to:


  • Telecommunication and energy systems
  • Large agricultural land
  • Natural resources such as gold, manganese, limestone, marble, phosphates and pumice
  • Imports from the United States of machinery pharmaceutical products, cars and milling product
  • Exports to United States of shea butter, baobab oil, cashew
